GENERAL
Spain is the third largest country in Europe, with a surface area of more than half a million square kilometres. The most developed tourist regions of mainland Spain are Andalucia, Valencia, Catalonia and Murcia. The country has a population of over forty million.
It is a democratic country, with an elected central legislative body, consisting of the Senate and the Lower House. Its' nineteen autonomous regions, including two cities, have their own administrative bodies.
The country is the third most popular tourist destination in the world, with almost fifty million visitors each year. It boasts stunning, diverse scenery, a wealth of historical monuments and buildings, a diversity of traditions and customs, superb food, friendliness, and, of course, wonderful weather.

PASSPORTS AND VISAS
Visas are not required to enter Spain from the U.K.
Visitors entering Spain from the U.K. are required to present a passport as a means of identification.

TIME ZONE
Local time on the Spanish mainland is GMT + 1 hour in winter, and BST + 1 hour in summer, i.e. one hour ahead of the U.K.

CURRENCY
Spain uses the official currency of the European Currency - the Euro.

ELECTRICITY
Voltage for electrical appliances is 220v AC, and English appliances can be used without the need for a transformer. Sockets utilise standard European round-pinned plugs.

WEIGHTS AND MEASURES
The country uses the standard European metric system of grams/kilograms and metres/kilometres.

OPENING TIMES
Normal shop opening times are 10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
The large malls, department stores and supermarkets are open from 10.00 a.m. through until 9.00 p.m. or 10.00 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Many smaller shops in coastal tourist areas also keep these hours. On 12 Sundays per year, the malls, department stores and supermarkets are permitted to open.
Banks are open from 8.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m., Monday to Saturday, except during June to September when they are closed on Saturday.
Normal pharmacy opening times are 10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Night and Sunday hours are covered by a rota system, which is displayed outside pharmacies and in the daily press.
